When is a Tooth Extraction Necessary
Tooth extractions are recommended when a tooth cannot be saved through other treatments. Common reasons include:
- Severe tooth decay or infection that has damaged the tooth beyond repair
- Advanced gum disease causing loosening of one or more teeth
- Impacted wisdom teeth that are causing pain, crowding, or infection
- Overcrowding ahead of orthodontic treatment
- A cracked or broken tooth that cannot be restored with a crown or filling
- Baby teeth that haven't fallen out naturally and are blocking permanent teeth
Types of Tooth Extractions We Perform
Depending on the position and condition of your tooth, our dentist will recommend either a simple or a surgical extraction.
Simple Extraction
A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that is fully visible above the gumline. Our dentist will apply a local anesthetic to numb the area, then gently loosen the tooth using a dental instrument called an elevator before removing it with forceps. The procedure is straightforward, typically takes under 30 minutes, and causes minimal discomfort.
Surgical Extraction
A surgical extraction is required for impacted teeth — most commonly wisdom teeth — that have not fully erupted through the gum. You will receive both local anesthetic and, where needed, IV sedation to keep you relaxed and pain-free. Our dentist will make a small incision in the gum tissue and, in some cases, remove a small amount of bone before carefully extracting the tooth. Our team takes every measure to ensure the process is as smooth and comfortable as possible.

Recovering From a Tooth Extraction
Recovery time can vary from one patient to another; however, most people take just a few days to recover from a tooth extraction. The following tips can help ensure a smooth and comfortable healing process:
- Take all prescribed or recommended pain medications as directed
- Apply an ice pack to your cheek in 10-minute intervals for the first few hours to reduce swelling
- Rest and avoid strenuous activity for the first 24 hours
- Eat soft foods such as soup, yogurt, and mashed potatoes on the day of and the day after your extraction
- Continue brushing and flossing normally, but carefully avoid the extraction site
- Do not smoke, use a straw, or rinse forcefully for at least 48 hours, as this can dislodge the blood clot and delay healing
